Present tense merupakan bentuk kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris yang dipakai untuk mengindikasikan kejadian yang tengah berlangsung saat ini.

Selain itu, digunakan sebagai penyataan kebenaran umum dan untuk menunjukkan peristiwa yang berulang atau berulang.

Tenses yang paling sering digunakan dalam bahasa Inggris adalah present tense. Jenis-jenis tense sekarang termasuk di dalamnya simple present tense dan present continuous tense.

Simple present tense digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang berulang atau rutin, sementara present continuous tense mengekspresikan peristiwa yang tengah terjadi ketika kita berbicara.

1. Menyatakan Kejadian yang Terjadi secara Teratur atau Rutin

Present tense umumnya digunakan untuk menyatakan kebiasaan atau aktivitas yang dilakukan secara berulang-ulang pada waktu-waktu tertentu.
Contoh: "I always drink coffee in the morning.” (Saya selalu minum kopi di pagi hari)

2. Menyatakan Kejadian yang sedang Terjadi pada Saat Ini

Present tense, khususnya present continous tense juga berfungsi untuk menjelaskan kejadian yang sedang berlangsung atau terjadi pada saat pembicaraan.

Contohnya: "She is playing basketball with her friends right now." (Dia sedang bermain bola basket dengan teman-temannya saat ini)


3. Menyatakan Perasaan atau Pendapat

Fungsi selanjutnya adalah menyatakan pendapat ataupun perasaan. Present tense bisa digunakan untuk mengungkapkan perasaan, keyakinan, atau pendapat pribadi.
Contoh: "I love spending time with my family." (Aku suka menghabiskan waktu bersama keluargaku)

4. Menyatakan Kebenaran Umum atau Fakta

Present tense juga biasanya digunakan untuk menyatakan kebenaran yang umum diterima.
Contoh: "The Earth revolves around the sun." (Bumi mengelilingi matahari)

5. Menyatakan Perintah atau Instruksi

Di samping itu, kalimat-kalimat present tense juga bisa digunakan untuk mengungkapkan suatu instruksi ataupun perintah.

Contoh: "Please turn off the lights before leaving the room." (Tolong matikan lampu sebelum meninggalkan ruangan)


6. Menyatakan Jadwal atau Rencana yang Sudah Diatur

Present tense juga bisa dimanfaatkan dalam menyampaikan rencana, atau kejadian di masa depan yang sudah dijadwalkan.

Contoh: "The train leaves at 7 AM tomorrow morning." (Kereta ini berjalan pada pukul 7 pagi besok)

1. Simple Present Tense

Simple present tense adalah jenis tense yang umumnya digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang terjadi secara teratur, kebiasaan, fakta umum, atau pernyataan yang benar pada saat ini.

Ini juga digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian yang tetap, perasaan, dan pendapat. Berikut rumus dan contohnya:

Subjek + Kata Kerja1 (Verb1) (-s atau -es jika subjek adalah orang ketiga tunggal) + Objek

Contoh:

She sings a song every morning. (Dia menyanyikan lagu setiap pagi.)

• Subjek: She

• Kata Kerja 1: sing (kata kerja untuk "she" diikuti dengan -s)

• Objek: a song (sebuah lagu)

2. Present Continuous Tense

Jenis present tense selanjutnya adalah present contious tense. Jenis kalimat ini berfungsi untuk menggambarkan kejadian yang sedang terjadi atau terjadi selama pembicaraan.

Ini juga digunakan untuk menggambarkan persiapan atau kejadian yang akan datang yang sudah direncanakan.

Rumus dan contoh dari present contionous tense:

Subjek + To Be (am/is/are) + Kata Kerja1 (Verb1) + -ing + Objek

Contoh:

They are watching a movie right now. (Mereka sedang menonton film sekarang.)

• Subjek: They

• To Be: are (sesuai dengan "they")

• Kata Kerja1: watch (tanpa perubahan)

• Objek: a movie (sebuah film)
