Dikutip dari buku The Best Book of Toeic Preparation oleh Slamet Riyanto dan Anna Christina Handhini (2023: 2), TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) adalah tes bahasa Inggris yang digunakan sebagai alat standar untuk mengetahui keterampilan bahasa Inggris seseorang yang bukan penutur asli bahasa Inggris (non-native speakers of English).

Tes ini biasa menjadi tolak ukur, khususnya bagi para calon pegawai/karyawan yang akan atau sedang bekerja di perusahaan.

Tujuannya untuk mengukur kemampuan bahasa Inggris para pegawai/karyawan yang akan dipromosikan dalam perusahaan atau organisasi internasional di mana bahasa Inggris digunakan sebagai alat komunikasi.

Pada umumnya, TOEIC berlangsung selama 3 jam yang mengujikan kemampuan listening (menyimak), reading (membaca), speaking (berbicara), dan writing (menulis).
