Interprofessional communication in dental healthcare is a process that involves various professions in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. This requires effective communication skills among dentists, dental nurses, nutritionists, and other healthcare professionals to enhance team functionality and deliver high-quality dental care. Effective communication among professions can improve collaboration and, ultimately, the quality of service patients receive. In dental healthcare, interprofessional communication plays a crucial role in creating a safe and supportive environment for patients.
With good communication, collaboration among professionals in delivering dental care becomes more effective, ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate treatment according to their needs. On the other hand, poor communication can lead to delays in care, miscommunication regarding diagnosis, or incorrect treatment, all of which can impact patient outcomes.

According to a study published in the Journal of Dental Education, medical errors in dental healthcare, although rare, are often related to communication failures among team members. One real-life example is when a patient with chronic gum disease does not receive optimal care due to a lack of clear communication between the dentist and dental nurse regarding necessary follow-up steps. This can lead to treatment delays and the development of more serious complications.
The importance of good interprofessional communication is also highlighted in a report from the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), which revealed that errors in dental healthcare are often caused by misunderstandings or a lack of coordination between healthcare professionals. When team members do not communicate clearly with each other, patients may suffer from inadequate or even harmful care. Therefore, implementing effective interprofessional communication in dental healthcare is crucial to prevent medical errors and improve patient care quality.

A recent field study visit to RSGM Unair (Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut Universitas Airlangga) provided a real-world perspective on how interprofessional communication plays out in a dental healthcare setting. During the visit, I observed how dental students, faculty members, and other healthcare professionals collaborated to provide holistic care for patients. The integration of different disciplines—such as dentistry, nursing, and nutrition—was evident in patient care planning, where all team members participated in discussions, ensuring that every aspect of the patient’s needs was addressed.
At RSGM Unair, I learned how important it is to establish clear lines of communication, particularly in a teaching hospital setting where students are learning while providing care. Effective communication was practiced through regular case discussions, standard operating procedures for patient care, and the use of modern tools for sharing patient information. These practices not only enhanced the quality of patient care but also provided a supportive learning environment for students and professionals alike.
To ensure effective collaboration and reduce the risk of miscommunication in dental healthcare, several steps can be implemented:

Overall, implementing effective interprofessional communication can significantly reduce the risk of medical errors, improve the quality of care, and increase patient satisfaction in dental healthcare services. In the long term, this can also enhance team efficiency and provide a positive experience for patients, ultimately improving the reputation of dental healthcare services in the community.
