Contoh text narrative bahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu materi yang sering muncul dalam ujian sekolah. Narrative text merupakan satu di antara jenis teks bahasa Inggris dan biasanya ada di pelajaran sekolah SMA.

Mengutip dari buku Smart Plus Soshum SMA, Tim Presiden Eduka, (2020:401), text narrative adalah teks yang menceritakan kisah yang terjadi pada masa lampau. Biasanya teks ini bersifat imajinatif atau fiksi dan berfungsi menghibur para pembacanya.

Berikut merupakan sejumlah contoh text narrative bahasa Inggris dalam berbagai tema:

1. True Friends

Once upon a time, there were two close friends who were walking through the forest together. They knew that anything dangerous can happen any time in the forest. So they promised each other that they would always be together in any case of danger.

Suddenly, they saw a large bear getting closer toward them. One of them climbed a nearby tree at once. But unfortunately the other one did not know how to climb up the tree. So being led by his common sense, he lay down on the ground breathless and pretended to be a dead man.

The bear came near the one who was lying on the ground. It smelt in his ears, and slowly left the place because the bears do not want to touch the dead creatures. After that, the friend on the tree came down and asked his friend who was on the ground, "Friend, what did the bear whisper into your ears?" The other friend replied, "Just now the bear advised me not to believe a false friend".

2. The Fox and The Grapes

One afternoon there was a fox that was walking through the forest and spotted a bunch of grapes hanging from over a lofty branch. "Just the thing to quench my thirst," quoted the fox. Taking a few steps backward, the fox jumped but unfortunately he missed the hanging grapes. Again the fox took a few paces backward, ran, and tried to reach them but he still failed.

Finally, giving up, the fox turned up his nose and said, "They're probably sour anyway," and proceeded to walk away.

3. The Ant and the Dove

One hot day, an ant was seeking some water. After walking around for a moment, she came to a spring. To reach the spring, she had to climb up a blade of grass. While making her way up, she slipped and fell unintentionally into the water.

She could have sunk if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen her. Seeing that the ant was in trouble, the dove quickly put off a leaf from a tree and dropped it immediately into the water near the struggling ant. Then the ant moved towards the leaf and climbed up there. Soon it carried her safely to dry ground.

Not long after that, there was a hunter nearby who was throwing out his net towards the dove, hoping to trap it in this way.

Guessing what he should do, the ant quickly bit him on the heel. Feeling the pain, the hunter dropped his net and the dove flew away quickly from this net.

4. The Story of a Rainbow

A very long time ago, there was a nice farmer named John. He married a beautiful woman and both of them had a beautiful baby boy.

But one day, the wife and son of the farmer got sick. Then the wife wore her wings and then flew with the son next to her, leaving the farmer alone and heartbroken.

The gods didn't want to see him sad and heart broken. They help the farmer by building a gorgeous, colorful bridge. The farmer can climb the sky and then see his wife and son again.

5. The Thirsty Crow

After flying a long distance, a thirsty crow was wandering the forest in search of water. Finally, he saw a pot half-filled with water. He tried to drink from it but his beak wasn’t long enough to reach the water inside.

He then saw pebbles on the ground and one by one, he put them in the pot until the water rose to the brim. The crow then hastily drank from it and quenched his thirst.

6. The Dog and the Bone

Once there was a dog who wandered the streets night and day in search of food.

One day, he found a big juicy bone and he immediately grabbed it between his mouth and took it home. On his way home, he crossed a river and saw another dog who also had a bone in its mouth.

He wanted that bone for himself too. But as he opened his mouth, the bone he was biting fell into the river and sank. That night, he went home hungry.

7. Lazy John

There was a boy named John who was so lazy, he couldn’t even bother to change his clothes. One day, he saw that the apple tree in their yard was full of fruits.

He wanted to eat some apples but he was too lazy to climb the tree and take the fruits. So he lay down underneath the tree and waited for the fruits to fall off. John waited and waited until he was very hungry but the apples never fell.

8. Lost in the Enchanted Forest

Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a curious young girl named Lily. One day, she decided to explore the mysterious enchanted forest that everyone warned her about. As she ventured deeper, the trees seemed to come alive, and the air buzzed with magic.

Lost and frightened, Lily encountered talking animals and helpful fairies who guided her back home. From that day on, she cherished the enchanting memories of her magical adventure.

9. The Unlikely Friendship

In a bustling city, an introverted boy named Alex befriended a stray cat he named Whiskers. Despite initial hesitation, their bond grew stronger each day. Whiskers, once a lonely feline, transformed into a loyal companion.

Together, they explored the city's hidden gems, teaching Alex the true meaning of friendship and reminding him that sometimes, companionship comes from the most unexpected places.

10. Facing the Dragon's Lair

In the kingdom of Eldoria, a young knight named Arthur was tasked with a daunting mission – to rescue the kidnapped princess from the fearsome dragon's lair. With a brave heart, Arthur faced treacherous terrain and overcame obstacles.

In a fierce battle, he confronted the dragon and, surprisingly, discovered the princess had befriended the creature. Arthur's courage and kindness not only saved the princess but also united two unlikely friends.

11. The Old Man and His Faithful Dog

In a quiet village, an old man named Mr. Thompson lost his way of life after the passing of his wife. However, his faithful dog, Max, stayed by his side, offering comfort and companionship.

Together, they walked the familiar paths, reminiscing about the past. Max's unwavering loyalty helped Mr. Thompson find solace, proving that even in the face of loss, true companionship endures.

12. The Magical Rainbow Valley

Deep in the heart of the mystical Rainbow Valley, a young girl named Emma discovered a world filled with vibrant colors and talking creatures. Each rainbow held a unique power, and Emma learned to harness them to spread joy and harmony.

The once-hidden valley became a place of wonder, where the magic of friendship and the beauty of diversity transformed the world into a brighter, more enchanting place.

13. The American Revolution

The American Revolution was a time of great upheaval in the colonies, with many of the colonists feeling that they were being unfairly taxed and oppressed by the British government.

The revolution was sparked by events such as the Boston Tea Party and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and it eventually led to the colonies winning their independence from Britain and forming the United States of America.

14. Romeo and Juliet

“Romeo and Juliet” is a tragic play by William Shakespeare about two young lovers from feuding families. Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love at a masquerade ball, but their families’ hatred prevents them from being together.

They secretly marry but are separated when Romeo is banished from the city. Juliet fakes her death to avoid marrying another man, but Romeo believes she is really dead and takes his own life.

When Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo dead beside her, she stabs herself. The tragic end of “Romeo and Juliet” is a powerful exploration of the themes of love, family, and fate.

15. The Legend of Banyuwangi

In the east of Java, there is a legend of Banyuwangi, a kingdom that was once ruled by a just and kind king. The king had a beautiful daughter named Dewi Kilisuci, who was promised in marriage to the demon king Raja Singa.

The king refused to marry his daughter off to a demon, and the demon king declared war on Banyuwangi. The battle lasted for seven days and seven nights, and Banyuwangi was eventually destroyed.

However, before the kingdom was destroyed, Dewi Kilisuci took her own life to prevent herself from being taken by the demon king.
