Secara umum, struktur application letter dibagi menjadi kepala surat (alamat surat, alamat pengirim dan tanggal surat), salam pembuka, isi surat, dan penutup.
Dalam application letter, pelamar kerja juga harus menjabarkan identitas sekaligus kemampuan diri serta ungkapan ketertarikan terhadap posisi yang dilamar.

Apa yang Dimaksud dengan Application Letter?
Dalam bahasa Inggris, sebutan lain dari application letter adalah cover letter yang berarti sampul surat. Dokumen ini biasanya diserahkan kepada pihak pemberi kerja bersamaan dengan resume atau cv.
Mengutip buku Pedoman Lengkap Menulis Surat oleh Ali dan Tanzali, application letter adalah surat permohonan resmi yang dibuat oleh pencari kerja kepada badan usaha atau instansi agar mendapatkan tawaran kerja.
Thomas Means berpendapat dalam buku Bussines Communication, application letter adalah pesan yang ditulis oleh pencari kerja untuk menyatakan minatnya pada suatu pekerjaan dan meminta wawancara kepada pihak pemberi kerja.
Berdasarkan penjelasan di atas, application letter adalah surat permohonan resmi yang ditulis oleh pencari kerja untuk diberikan ke perusahaan yang membuka lowongan pekerjaan agar diberikan kesempatan wawancara.
Apa Struktur dari Application Letter?
Application letter termasuk surat resmi yang harus ditulis sesuai dengan strukturnya. Penulisan kalimatnya pun juga harus menggunakan bahasa yang resmi atau baku.

1. Kepala surat
Pada bagian kepala surat, pelamar kerja perlu menulis tanggal surat, alamat dan kontak pribadi, dan alamat perusahaan. Contoh:

2. Salam pembuka
Salam pembuka sangat perlu ditulis dalam application letter untuk menunjukkan rasa hormat. Apabila mengetahui nama pihak HRD atau personalia, maka cantumkan namanya. Jika tidak, gunakan Hiring Manager atau sejenisnya. Contoh:

3. Paragraf pembuka
Dalam pembukaan surat lamaran, pelamar harus menarik perhatian pembaca agar seluruh surat terbaca. Sertakan informasi berikut dalam paragraf pembuka application letter:
Tunjukkan bahwa ingin melamar suatu posisi.
Sebutkan posisi yang ingin dilamar.
Ceritakan bagaimana pelamar mengetahui lowongan pekerjaan.
Identifikasi kemampuan yang dimiliki.
Jika lowongan pekerjaan tersebut ditemukan dalam sebuah iklan, contoh paragraf pembuka application letter-nya adalah sebagai berikut:
Please consider me as an applicant for the management trainee position you advertised in the October 12 issue of the Daily Leader. My degree in management and my work experience as an assistant store manager qualify me for this position.
4. Isi
Isi surat adalah hal yang perlu ditulis setelah paragraf pembuka. Isi atau badan surat ini harus meyakinkan pihak perusahaan bahwa kita adalah orang yang tepat untuk pekerjaan itu. Meski demikian, jangan mengulangi fakta yang disajikan dalam resume.
Namun, jabarkan fakta-fakta itu untuk pembaca. Cobalah untuk menggambarkan sifat atau karakter, pengalaman, dan kualifikasi lain namun tetap cocok dengan pekerjaan yang di laman pada bagian isi ini.
Apabila menanggapi lowongan pekerjaan yang dipublikasikan, jelaskan bagaimana kualifikasi yang dimiliki telah memenuhi kriteria yang diminta. Berikut adalah contoh isi application letter yang berfokus pada persyaratan pengalaman kerja:
As a quality control inspector, I worked closely with the plant manager to improve quality and reduce costs. During my year in this position, my de partment was rated number 1 in quality, and costs were down 8 percent.
Jika tidak memiliki banyak pengalaman, fokuslah pada kualifikasi yang lainnya. Misalnya, pendidikan, aktivitas yang serupa dengan lowongan pekerjaan, atau keinginan untuk mempelajari pekerjaan tersebut. Contohnya sebagai berikut:
During my first year of college, I was awarded an academic scholarship. While working toward my associate degree in business administration, I was elected vice president of the school's Phi Beta Lambda chapter. As vice president, I organized and hosted a fundraising event that generated $8500 for leukemia research.
Pelamar juga harus menjelaskan informasi apa pun dalam resume yang sekiranya dapat menimbulkan pertanyaan atau menyebabkan reaksi negatif.
Misalnya, pelamar membutuhkan waktu lama untuk menyelesaikan pendidikan, maka harus dijelaskan alasannya dalam application letter. Perhatikan contoh berikut:
While attending college, I worked full-time to support my family and pay for my school expenses. I took three courses each semester and com pleted my associate degree in three years.
5. Penutup
Paragraf penutup harus memiliki nada percaya diri dan meminta wawancara. Permudah pihak perusahaan dalam menghubungi untuk wawancara dengan memberikan kontak pelamar.
Hindari frasa yang terlalu sering digunakan. Perhatikan paragraf penutup berikut:
As my enclosed resume illustrates, my education and experience qualify me for this position. May I have an interview with you to discuss my qualifications for the job? You can reach me at 555-0177 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. any weekday.
Jika menulis surat ke perusahaan luar kota, sebutkan kapan pelamar berada di area tersebut untuk wawancara. Contohnya:
