Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih were stepsisters. Bawang Merah was a lazy and wicked girl, while Bawang Putih was a hardworking and kind hearted girl whose biological mother had passed away long ago. They lived with Bawang Merah’s wicked mother, who often treated Bawang Putih badly.

One day, Bawang Putih went to the river to wash clothes and lost a piece of cloth. While searching for the cloth, she met an old woman. The old women knew where the cloth was and was willing to help her. The condition was that Bawang Putih had to help her with some work first.

Bawang Putih agreed to the condition and helped the old woman. After finishing the work, the old woman kept her promise and gave Bawang Putih the cloth. The old woman also gave her two pumpkins of different sizes as gift.

However, Bawang Putih who was not greedy only took the smaller pumpkins.

When she returned home, Bawang Putih was scolded by her stepmother and Bawang Merahfor being late. The stepmother then broke the pumpkins, but it turned out to be filled with jewelry. Bawang Putih explained where the pumpkins came from, but her stepmother angry because Bawang Putih had not chosen the larger pumpkins.

Bawang Merah then followed Bawang Putih’s steps and let her cloth float in the river to meet the old woman. Her wish was granted, but she refused to help the old woman as Bawang Putih did. Bawang Merah also demanded the old woman to give her the large pumpkins.

After getting the large pumpkin, she returned home and broke it. But inside was a venomous snake that scared her.
