Gugun Gumilar was born in Purwakarta, West Java, Indonesia on April 20th, 1989. He earned his M.A. in Religious Studies cum laude at Hartford, in the United States in 2014. Gumilar is well known as Indonesian Youth Activist, Indonesian Young Global Leader, and Founder/Executive Director of the Institute of Democracy and Education (IDE) Indonesia.

He participated as speaker in the panel discussion forum at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC in 2014, as an Indonesian student leader in the United States. He joined the summer scholars program at the International Institute of Islamic Thought in Virginia, U.S. in 2013. He completed internships at the Global Peace Festival Foundation in Washington DC in 2013, the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC in 2014, and at the United States Indonesia Society (USINDO) in Washington DC, in 2014. He gave a speech on Capitol Hill in Washington DC titled “US-China Relations on the Perspective of Indonesia” on the occasion of the International Young Leaders Assembly in 2013. He spoke at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City titled “The Role of Youth in the 21st Century under the same program in 2014.

He attended the United Nations Alliance of Civilization conference in Doha, Qatar, in 2011 and a similar conference in Shanghai, China in 2012. He also attended the World Leadership Conference in Singapore 2011. He received a scholarship from the Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) of the U.S. Department on Religious Pluralism and Democracy program at Temple University in 2011. He also studied International Relations in the United Nations Alliance of Civilization program at the University of Lisbon, Portugal in 2011, and took International Relations courses at the University of Malaya in the same year. He was also invited to be young Indonesian delegate for World Intercultural dialogue in Baku, Azerbaijan organized by the Government of Azerbaijan and UNAOC in 2011. In the same year, he went to Istanbul, Turkey.

He often appears on the Voice of America in Washington DC for television program and radio, broadcasting to Indonesian media such as Metro TV, RCTI, and TVRI since 2013-2014.
In the volunteer programs and working experiences in national and international. He participated in UN Habitat programs in Connecticut in 2014. He actively engaged in social and religious activities program in the Indonesian Muslims Association of America in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and New York in 2013-2014 as a Muslim activists. He joined the Indonesian Group on MDGs as a leader task force program in Indonesia since 2010-2011. He was the former of president of global peace youth corps Indonesia in 2012. In the same year, he contributed in the successful of ASEAN games as organizing committee program in the athletics games in Jakarta venue, Indonesia. He participated in Asia Africa youth forum in Bandung, Indonesia in 2010. He also has madrasah (Islamic schools) run by him in Purwakarta, Indonesia since 2003 until now. He was a lecturer at the State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung since 2011-2012. And in the same year, he was a teacher in various senior high schools and pesantrens (Islamic traditional school) in Bandung, Indonesia. He actively contributed in various actives in the US Embassy and Australian Embassy programs in Jakarta since 2007-2012. He was a youth ambassador for the United Nations Alliance of Civilization in 2011. He is also often invited as Indonesia young speaker in any event in Indonesia until now. He is also an activist of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in the States and Indonesia and the ICMI (Indonesia Muslim Intellectual Board). Furthermore, he was invited by the International Young Leader General Assembly to be Keynote Speech at UN Headquarters, New York in 2015. His remarks on “The Role of Youth in Promoting unity in Diversity through Education and Social Media”.

In Indonesia, he initiated and successfully conducted international program for young leaders, such as Southeast Asia Leaders Summit (SEALS) in Bandung 2015, Southeast Asia Leaders Summit (SEALS) in Bandung 2016, World Village Conference in Purwakarta, West Java 2016, Southeast Asia Leaders Summit (SEALS) in Jakarta 2017, Kampung Inggris in Bengkulu, World Tolerance Conference 2017 in Purwakarta, West Java, and the up coming conference will be World Culture Forum 2017 in Prambanan, East Java.
His first book, Chasing Dreams of Indonesia, was published in 2012, and he contributed a chapter on religious tolerance to the book, Moderation: The Indonesian Experience, published by the Global Movement of Moderates Foundation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2013. He has also published many articles for public media. His current publication book “Muslim Christian Relations in the Framework of Pancasila to be published in 2017.”
