Dikutip dari Hafalan Luar Kepala 16 Tenses, Nina A. R. (2010:6), simple past tense adalah bentuk kata waktu lampau yang sederhana. Rumus simple past tense adalah:

• Kalimat verbal: S + V2 + O/C.

• Kalimat nominal: S + Be (was, were) + C.

Keterangan waktu simple past tense adalah before, just now, that day, yesterday, in the morning, the other day, last (week/month/year) dan ... ago.

Contoh 1

Last month we went back to our grandmother's house in Jogja. We traveled overland from Jakarta to Jogja using our own car.

We left after dawn to avoid traffic jams. Apparently most Jakartans going to Jogja thought the same way. Finally, we were immediately hit by a traffic jam at the Cikampek Toll Gate.

During the trip, the traffic flow was so heavy that one way and contraflow were applied. Rest areas were crowded. Fortunately, mom had prepared enough food and drinks in the car so we didn't have to queue at the restaurant.

We arrived at grandma's house 3 hours later than usual. We were tired but happy to see our dear grandmother.

Contoh 2

Three weeks ago we went on vacation to Jogja by plane. It turned out that getting to the city center of Jogja from the airport was very easy and very cheap.

After arriving at YIA airport, we bought airport train tickets online. Then we headed to the train station located on the top floor of YIA airport.

Along the way to the airport train station, there were many stalls selling crafts, food and souvenirs. We also watched people dancing for a while.

The airport train only took 35 minutes to reach Tugu Station in the center of Jogja. After getting off at Tugu Station, we simply walked to Malioboro. How convenient for tourists.
