Selain memperoleh kosa kata baru, siswa juga dapat menambah wawasan tentang dongeng atau cerita rakyat yang diwariskan secara turun temurun. Entah itu kisah nyata atau hanya karangan, banyak pesan moral yang bisa dipelajari siswa.

Berdasarkan informasi dari buku Buku Ajar Sastra Lama: Cerita Rakyat, Masni Dewi, S.Pd., M.Pd.,dkk.(2024:13), pengertian dongeng adalah cerita pendek yang diceritakan dari mulut ke mulut oleh masyarakat namun kebenarannya tidak diketahui.
Dongeng yang berkembang di Indonesia bisa saja hanya karangan belaka, namun masyarakat menjadikannya sarana hiburan. Ada juga yang menganggap dongeng sebagai sindiran dan kritik sosial.
Walaupun tidak benar-benar terjadi, dongeng bisa mengajarkan siswa banyak hal karena biasanya terdapat pesan moral. Di bawah ini ada 3 contoh dongeng Bahasa Inggris panjang yang bisa dibaca siswa.
1. Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, a family of fishermen lived in the village at west Sumatra, they are father, mother, and Malin Kundang. One day, Malin’s father goes to sea to find money for his family. But, sadly, he does not come back home.
Malin is a smart kid but a little naughty. One day, Malin saw his mother and felt sorry because Malin’s mother is working harder for her family. So, Malin decides to go to another city and come back when he becomes rich.
His mother disagreed, because her husband never returned. But, Malin insisted and then she agreed. After that, Malin went aboard with a merchant ship but the ship was attacked by pirates. Most of the passengers and crew are dead but Malin, he is so lucky.
Malin drifted until the ship became stranded on a beach and he walked to the nearest village. After arrived in the village, Malin decided to work and live there until rich. After becoming rich, Malin met a girl and married her.
After a long time, Malin met with his mother, but he felt embarrassed when it was known by his wife and crew. Malin’s mother was frustrated because not expect her son to be disobedient.
Then, his mother was praying with anger and said, “God, if true he is Malin my son. I curse him for becoming a rock!”
2. The Origin of Lake Toba
Once upon a time, a man named Batara Sihir caught a fish who could be a magical creature. When he cooked that fish, the fish changed to a beautiful girl named Boru Toba. After that, Boru Toba and Batara Sihir married and had a son named Partomuan.
But, the Gods were angered with the family and punished them by turning into stone. The stone family created a huge hole in the ground where they stood and it eventually filled with water. After that, the water became the Lake named Toba Lake.
3. The Story of Bawang Putih dan Bawang Merah
One day, their mother asked Bawang Putih to go to the river to wash some shirts. Bawang Merah saw that and thought this is an opportunity to get rid of Bawang Putih. When Bawang Putih went to the forest, she met an old woman and gave her a magical fish.
Bawang Putih was very happy and used the fish to help people in need. While Bawang Merah used the fish to her own interest. Eventually, the fish was lost, and the sisters had to face the consequences of their actions.
Bawang Putih was rewarded for her kindness and became a queen, while Bawang Merah was punished for her cruelty and became a beggar.
